What the Law Says About Number Plates
- Number plates must be displayed at both front and back of the vehicle
- They must be easy to read and meet BS AU 145d
- Lettering must be black on a white plate at front of the vehicle
- Lettering must be black on yellow at the rear of the vehicle
- The background surface of number plates must be reflex-reflecting
- The characters on number plates must NOT be reflex-reflecting
- Both lettering and spacing must conform to their relevant spec (before 1/09/2001 or after)
- Letters and numbers cannot be re-arranged, altered or misrepresented
Fall foul of the regulations and you may fail your next MOT, be fined up to £1,000 or have your registration mark withdrawn.
